The 1st World Taekwondo Championships organized by the Korea Taekwondo Association were held at the Kukkiwon in Seoul with participation of 200 competitors and officials from 19 countries. They were Austria, Brunei, Canada, Chinese Taipei, El Salvador, France, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Ivory Coast, Khmer, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, Japan, Singapore, Uganda, U.S.A., West Germany and Korea.

The 12th World Taekwondo Championships and the 5th Women's World Taekwondo Championships were held at Folk Arts Theater in Manila, Philippines with 379 men competitors from 74 countries and 219 women athletes from 50 countries and 56 IRs participating.
