The Foundation for Sports
The Foundation for Sports supports the scholarship of our young athletes.
Game To Learn
"There's no way you can pursue both amateur sport and a
post-secondary education."
That common refrain is being successfully challenged by the
Manitoba Foundation for Sports and the 299 young athletes who have already
received Foundation scholarships.
The scholarship program was created in 1991. Since that time
we've continued to focus on supporting developing athletes, who are competing at
the provincial championship level. In the 1996/97 fiscal year alone, 101
students involved in 36 different sports shared $71,000 in scholarships.
Approximately half were awarded to male athletes and half to female athletes.
Recipients were selected from more than 200 applications.
How do we choose? The criterion includes grade point average,
coaching activities and volunteer work. The awards are tiered, with recipients
entering their first year receiving $500 and those in subsequent years receiving
$1,000.
How to Apply
The deadline for applications is generally during the third week
of April. Scholarships are usually awarded in June.

MANITOBA ATHLETES TO GET ADDITIONAL
FUNDING
May 31, 1999
Winnipeg MB --- Sport Manitoba President & CEO Jeff Hnatiuk has announced
that direct funding to support Manitoba’s top athletes is being increased to
$250,000 this year.
“Provincial Athlete Assistance Program funding goes directly to our high
performance athletes to support their continued training and competition
opportunities,” said Hnatiuk. “An additional $50,000 in program funding is
good news for athletes who need the resources to sustain a level of training
required to reach their full potential.”
The Athlete Assistance Program provides grants ranging from $500 to $1,500 to
high performance and developmental athletes based on their performance at their
sport’s annual national championship or their status as a member of their
national team. Additional funding will mean that individual grants for active
members of national teams which represent Canada at their sport’s major
international competitions will be increased by $500 to $1,500 annually.
Hnatiuk also announced that the Athlete Assistance Program is being expanded to
recognize provincial championship teams.
“Each year we have teams which incur tremendous expense representing Manitoba
in national championships,” Hnatiuk said. “Athlete assistance grants will
provide an incentive for them to do well and help offset some of the costs for
those who are most successful.”
A grant of $1,500 will be available to a team that finishes first in its sports
National Open, Senior “A”, Junior “A” or CIAU Championship. $1,000 will
be awarded to a second place finisher and $500 to a team that finishes third.
Between 250 and 300 Manitoba athletes benefit through the Athlete Assistance
Program each year.
